Identification

I just ran a quick experiment. I posted the same two photos of unidentified moths both here and in the Flickr group ID Please, and then I also directly emailed some of our colleagues who are familiar with Asian moths, pointing them to LepTree.

Of these three methods, I'm not surprised that the directed emails worked to identify them to species first (thank you, Shipher). However, that's not usually an option most people have. ID Please is nice because there are several thousand people that apparently have nothing better to do with their free time than to share their knowledge (or their references at hand) with complete strangers. Their expertise tends to be focused more on North America and Europe, however.

I'm also not surprised that visitors to LepTree.net probably didn't notice the newly posted photos, and even Shipher sent his response directly to me rather than add the ID in a comment.

We have a couple of other unidentified specimens in that gallery. Kim, have they really remained unidentified, or is the website out of date? Can anybody imagine LepTree.net members using the gallery to help each other identify their unknowns? Or will it be too much effort to check in and then comment on the photo?

The Name that moth gallery might be an especially nice one to create an RSS feed for.

unidentified photos

Cyndy, there is now only 1 pair of unidentified wings that I posted -- from Africa and unlikely to get a name any time soon. When I get a name, I move it out of that page. If you have ID's for the 2 black-and-yellow moths, have you supplied the name for them to the website?

Thanks for pointing it out,

Thanks for pointing it out, Kim. I had the identifications in the comments but forgot to take them out of the Name that Moth gallery. I've done it now.
