Lepidoptera Knowledge Base Overview
LepTree aims to provide an array of tools allowing all lepidopterists to access and contribute on-line to a state-of-the art knowledge base in lepidopteran phylogenetics. At first, this will include descriptions and summaries of our current understanding of phylogeny for all superfamilies and families. Subsequently it will incorporate data matrices and associated images, phylogenetic analyses, and other features.
Our primary target audience is researchers. However, we will also post excerpts from the data base to general-use outreach sites including the Arizona Tree of Life project, on which there is still very incomplete coverage of Lepidoptera.
The initial content will be provided by a network of “Twig Leaders” and other collaborators. Subsequently contributions can come from any lepidopterist. A central premise of LepTree, drawing on the model of successful genome annotation initiatives, is that instant open access to research findings, and to informal exchange with other researchers, will speed global progress on lepidopteran phylogeny. This community resource is expected to function well beyond the end of the current project.
